Or how many US nationals are "stationed" there as part of commercial business assignments?

It sort of makes the notion that it is "too dangerous" to assign military dependents there a little bit laughable. BUT it would require considerable budget to figure out a way to get all those dependents out of there in a hurry. In the old days in Europe we called that NEO.

http://www.armyg1.army.mil/MilitaryPersonnel/NEO.aspcrosspatchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02202499155608563500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-22069634691871918222008-03-11T13:40:00.000-04:002008-03-11T13:40:00.000-04:00Small world. My Korea remote was in 1992 also, at Pil Sung Range, which was REALLY remote!

A few years earlier a friend took his wife to Kunsan, non-sponsered. They lived in a hovel, which is all there is for non-sponsered troops near Kunsan.

She got sick, but either couldn't or didn't want to see a doctor on the base until it was too late. She died of hepatitis.Jim Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18228368552972082442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-37580883369394960952008-03-11T08:31:00.000-04:002008-03-11T08:31:00.000-04:00Nate,WADR, I think the general you are referring t...Nate,

WADR, I think the general you are referring to is B.B. My son served in the 2nd ID Cp Castle, in 2004 for a year. We visited, not much has changed, except the society at large and how they live. Everywhere is first world nation. I lived in a hooch, with the misses. Now its condos or high end apartments, with tables and chairs. With our capabilities, theres no reason to be in Korea. Dont get me started on that goof ball Kim Jong Il. The SK have there own defense and we need to stop subsidising their defense and bring our troops. Christ if theres a problem load up one of those missles and turn them into a parking lot. But Bell has the right idea, if we're going to stay, make it liviable for the troops.artillerysurveyorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12070729910051636357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-12650791853060290152008-03-10T18:50:00.000-04:002008-03-10T18:50:00.000-04:00NateI love reading your blog every day and normall...Nate
I love reading your blog every day and normally agree with your assessments, but in this case, I think you are wrong. I took a command sponsored billet to Osan Dec 88 to June 91 (with a 5 month TDY to the Gulf War in the middle). Other than the five months when my wife and son were at Osan by themselves when I was in the Gulf, it was a good assignment and a heck of a lot better than the alternative.
Sure it took some getting use to, but it was a cultural shock that in some ways brought us together as a family. I saw so many of my co-workers go crazy in the bar/strip club scene without their families and how it effected their lives that I counted myself lucky that I had the support of my family. Having a teenage son in that environment was a challenge, but I think he is better for it.
If our intel puke buddies are doing their jobs, I think it would increase moral in an assignment where I recall moral was pretty low.
Keep up the good work.
By the way, I see a lot of parallels between your career and mine.
IdabobBob Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06670731921877098826noreply@blogger.com
