I work at JFCOM & read your blog 3-4 times per week. However, starting last week your blog has been banned and now one merely gets the prohibited site page. Once was during a tour for the Chief of Hurlburt Field, when he got in the back of an Mi-17 I was flying, wearing the new Multi-Cam uniform that Special Tactics was wearing in Afghanistan (it was a Monday, too, so we joked about taking a picture of Roy and using it for a Get-out-Jail card if we forgot to wear blues on a future Monday morning). Didn't give the enlisted aircrew guys on the helo a coin, which seemed a little off to me, but go figure, maybe he ran out.

The second time, I was helping run an AFSOC Recruiting booth at the Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando last February. Both Gen. Schwartz and Chief Roy were there. Out of all the booths and displays, only two organizations from the active duty Air Force had booths set up, ours and some AMC-related booth on the opposite side of the hall. We could see Schwartz and Roy peering in our direction and Roy even came within about 40 feet of us, but neither of them came over and talked to us, much less discussed our efforts or examined our display. I was happy that 3 former AFSOC commanders, and the current AFSOC commander, spoke to us at length, asking our opinion about current operations, etc... but was a little put off with the higher echelon walking within shouting distance but not actually, you know, stopping by. Schwartz was my first Wing Commander at Hurlburt Field, so I was fully expecting him to at least walk up and look at what we had set up.

But I was especially puzzled with Chief Roy since I was standing next to two decorated STS NCOs, one Combat Controller and one PJ. Chief Roy saw both of them standing there in uniform but just looked over while cruising around. The Symposium was packed with officers in their blues, running around by the score, but very few NCOs and only two in the entire place were wearing ABUs - the Combat Controller and Pararescue NCO.

Do those two small snap-shots really say anything about Roy? No, it would be unfair to make a judgement on something so fleeting. Yet, it says something about our Air Force when the top NCO sees two of the most outstanding enlisted men you could ask for and just walks on by without even stopping long enough to shake their hand. Both of these guys had done multiple tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and god knows where else. When we showed up in our mess dress for dinner that night, I saw that the Combat Controller had two Purple Hearts, but I never would have known from talking to him for two days straight. Roy owes something to men like that, because they're kind of rare and almost impossible to replace. If either one of those guys was thinking about leaving the Air Force before retirement, a kind word from Chief Roy might have been the one thing that convinced them to give just one more deployment.
