If there is a cause and effect relationship there it eludes me unless you are saying that Bill Clinton undermined his own stature and that of the office.

I too support attrition of Taliban and AQ leadership in Pakistan and any other location, for that matter. Given time, President Obama may demonstrate that he has the resolve to stay in the fight and press on for victory but McCain was clearly willing to sustain the fight on all fronts and did not suggest at any time that he would be willing to back down.

Just so you know, I'm was no fan of either of them as Senators and did not relish the thought of them representing their respective parties in 2008.tfhrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08056518846851745411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-15345194265967684552009-07-18T13:44:52.555-04:002009-07-18T13:44:52.555-04:00Paul G.,

We'd all like to see fewer unintended casualties but allowing the Taliban or AQ to take refuge amongst civilian populations seems counter to removing them as a threat or influence.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090622/ap_on_re_as/as_afghanistan

We can probably argue those points but there is no argument to sustain politicization of the CIA.

Whether as a political tool or whipping boy, misuse or abuse of the CIA to target political opponents in Capitol Hill squabbles is a disservice to us all, not just to the CIA.

Finally, please explain the value of your final comment about the novice senator with "zero military experience" and how that might be reassuring to anyone.tfhrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08056518846851745411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-58784622708460279112009-07-17T13:30:41.827-04:002009-07-17T13:30:41.827-04:00Somehow I seem to have absolutely no problem with ...Somehow I seem to have absolutely no problem with abuses and civilian casualties amongst these people. The Republican's disregard for the institution of the presidency and the long term good of the country in their attempts to impeach Clinton were nearly, but not quite, as bad as what the Dems have done. Of course, the undermining of Clinton helped pave the way for the particularly ruthless way that the likes of Reid or Murtha undermined the war effort. I support Obama in his efforts to fight the war effectively for same reason I supported Bush - he is the only president we've got. Keeping Gates and pressing the war in Afghanistan with some readily observable determination gets my unstinting approval. I am worried about our soldier's success in Iraq being squandered, but am hard pressed to know how McCain (who I voted for) could have handled the Bush negotiated status of forces agreement differently. So far I'd rate the new president on foreign policy much like I did tho old one - a mixed performance. It's just a different mix.lgudehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12774491337993415578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-78186674094652109732009-07-16T13:06:38.086-04:002009-07-16T13:06:38.086-04:00Just more of the same is right.

You would know if there were or weren't wouldn't you?

For a party that's "largely lost credibility on defense and intelligence issues" it seems odd that a young senator with zero military experience defeated a military hero in an election during a time of war.Paul G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/17270835772123856564noreply@blogger.com
