They have a "style" that is always evident when you've seen enough of them around the 'net. Democrat talking points abound, and always the disingenuous rejoinder like his ending sentence about bringing the troops home.Webriderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12740277223501727114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-53436085836041753292008-10-30T14:31:00.000-04:002008-10-30T14:31:00.000-04:00J.R.--Let's cut to the chase; if Senator Obama was...J.R.--Let's cut to the chase; if Senator Obama was genuinely concerned about military voters, there was nothing preventing him from introducing similar legislation in the Senate. Apparently, Mr. Obama is a late-comer to the issue, generating a meaningless letter that won't help a single military voter.

As for the GOP, if you read the post, you'll see I'm equally tough on them. The only heroes in this scandal are the House Republicans who are trying to introduce meaningful change--and the Secretary of State of Arizona, who has created a system that should be adopted natiowide.

Finally, your comment about "bringing our troops home" so they won't have to cast absentee ballots is a canard. Fact is, most military members are stationed outside their home states and vote absentee, deployed or not. Traditionally, at least 60% of armed forces cast absentee ballots.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12712369389411084085noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-64985295885445059042008-10-30T13:35:00.000-04:002008-10-30T13:35:00.000-04:00Spook86, this is an absolutely wonderful post and ...Spook86, this is an absolutely wonderful post and I totally agree with everything you've said. I also think we need a "Joe the Soldier" to ask questions that must be asked. I disagree with j.r. when he/she says, "As for leadership on the issue, Obama has suggested a powerful solution for increasing military voter turnout: get them back home, where they don't have to deal with absentee ballots."

The problem with that position, j.r., is that our military members abroad are doing the job we asked them to do: protecting this Country and its interests. If we bring them all back home, our interests aren't protected and we may not have a "home" to come to. Terrorists may have blown it up.Lelahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13612218674667870635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10820485.post-9616894409750283062008-10-30T12:01:00.000-04:002008-10-30T12:01:00.000-04:00Sen Obama hasn't co-sponsored the House bill; the ...Sen Obama hasn't co-sponsored the House bill; the most likely reason for this is that he is in the Senate. His ambivalence on the Senate side probably springs from his busy schedule (what with being the nominee). No Senator has drafted a similar bill, or we'd have evidence of Sens. McCain and Obama's position on the issue.

The only evidence we have to answer your rhetorical question -- does he support Rep. Hoyer's position -- is his campaign's position, which you apparently reject. Is there any actual evidence that he is being disingenuous? He is not yet the President; the role of nominee is a powerful one but has no legislative clout. I agree that it's a fairly empty gesture, but what more do you want him to do? And if you ask it of Senator Obama, surely you're prepared to ask Senator McCain the same question?

I suspect the motivation is to send a clear message to Democratic election officials that voter suppression is bad no matter which side does it -- it's going to be a big issue given the large turnout and confusion, and the Obama campaign needs to make its position clear before the lawyers start throwing paper around on the 5th.

As for leadership on the issue, Obama has suggested a powerful solution for increasing military voter turnout: get them back home, where they don't have to deal with absentee ballots.J.R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13913599852443572486noreply@blogger.com
